Doug McDade, one of our esteemed on camera faculty, is busy not only managing Shattered Globe, he's currently involved in the pre-production of PALMER PARK, a play by Joanne McClelland-Glass he is directing for Waukegan's Clockwise Theatre. The film CUTEeGRL, which he co-directed with screenplay writer Jeton Murtishi, starring ATC's Katie Chang is hitting film festivals world-wide and recently took Best Short Film Thriller at THE ILLINOIS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL on November 20, 2011:

On the eve of his death, William Shakespeare relives another fateful night, fifteen years earlier, when the Lord Chamberlain's Men were invited to perform for Queen Elizabeth—the night before her beloved Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, was to be beheaded for treason to the Crown. The Queen sentenced him to death, and only she can pardon him before the morning. With the possibility of rioting in the streets, a curfew is imposed and the acting company must be lodged that night in the royal stables. Desperately needing distraction from the fateful night's events, Elizabeth seeks out the company of Shakespeare and the actors.

But it is not Shakespeare who commands her attention as much as does Ned Lowenscroft, the actor she has seen portray Shakespeare's female roles, including that evening, Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. His body covered in bruises and sores, Ned is dying of syphilis—giving him a fool's license perhaps as he engages the Queen in verbal combat through the night as she awaits her Robert's execution. The actor is set upon revealing the woman who is buried beneath the role the "Virgin Queen" has played, as she, in turn, demands that Ned discover the strength of a man facing his own death, without script in hand.

Casting is underway for ADVANTAGE: WEINBAUM, the new comedy from Concentrated Films. Written and Directed by David Singer (who recently came to national prominence with his score for the Tony Award-winning August: Osage County), ADVANTAGE: WEINBAUM is a hilarious story of a teenage schemer who goes to impossible lengths to make the perfect first impression.

We are currently looking for the following principals:

Philip is 16. He has dark hair and eyes. He is Jewish, but his looks need not conform to any particular Jewish stereotype. He is skinny and young looking, but attractive. He needs to be articulate, confident, funny, CHARISMATIC above all else.

Colleen is 18. She is blonde and beautiful, but in an unfussy All-American type way. She is comfortable and confident, charming and down-to-earth. She should be able to sing prettily, in an un-American Idol way. Think Margaux Hemingway in Manhattan or Mandy Moore.

Juan and Only Events has partnered with Dwyane Wade and the Wade's World Foundation to invite youth centers that are making a difference in our Chicago community to his 2nd annual Dwyane Wade's Chicago Has Talent Showcase. We are inviting you to get your kids involved by auditioning and attending this wonderful event. You may or may not be aware of "Chicago Has Talent." It is a showcase featuring youth (ages 7-18) that have won a spot to perform at the Chicago Theater to win great prizes. This years surprise performances are still being determined, but it will be a great show and its free for the children. Last years performers included: Lupe Fiasco and Jeremih. "Chicago Has Talent" will take place on Saturday Aug 27th, auditions for the event will be held from 9am until 2pm and the actual showcase will be from 7pm until 9:30pm.

This year's STAGE TO SCREEN program, where 3rd-5th and 6th-8th grade students (under the directions of Associate Director Philip Markle and teacher Rachel Wilson) create an original film and an original play is well under way. The films are almost completed, and will be screened next Friday, August 5th at noon at the Wilmette Theatre. All are invited!

Fiddler' plays to packed crowd at 'Mette by Joe Coughlin

"Fiddler on the Roof" is a complicated musical, guiding the audience through a roller coaster of emotions.The classic explores tradition in a changing culture, family values amid religious persecution, and even integrity versus true love.

Sounds like a story best told through the eyes of elder theater players. But don't tell that to the Actors Training Center, which put on "Fiddler" with tremendous success with a cast of local teenage talent.Not that they are trained like teens, however. As Wilmette Theatre co-owner Carole Dibo told the standing room-only crowd before the musical began Saturday, July 9: "We ask these kids to step into our world of professional theater."And as Tom Hayes, a New Trier student, opened the performance with a solo speech as protagonist Tevye, you realized what Dibo was talking about.

Hayes played Tevye with a captivating honesty and exuberance. Hayes didn't waver as Tevye is dragged through a plethora of disconcerting scenarios that involve his friends, culture and most of all, his family, including his five daughters.

The idealistic Perchik, played by Mike Leibenson, and brave Hodel (Annie Roge) are stellar as the young pair who defy cultural norms; and Tzeitel (Emily Wronski) and Motel (Max Goldstein) provide the unlikely and solid romantic foundation for the story's main conflicts.

Jenn Maley steals plenty of scenes, as she keeps the audience laughing as Tevye's wife Golde.

But the musical went as far as Tevye and Hayes took it, which was to rousing praise from play-viewers.

A handful of Actors Training Center students sitting in the first few rows praised Hayes with a slew of "Wow"s, commenting they would "do anything to work with him."

And as a whole, the play impressed.

"I think everything was so spot on," said Brooke Greenberg, a local and center-trained actress. "They put so much energy into it and it really showed."

After the dramatic conclusion to the play, the audience applauded and then formed a line outside the theater, waiting for the players.

Hi ATC Students and Parents,

Aside from having a blast teaching teaching and working with all the wonderful students at ATC, I also perform in a weekly show in Chicago with Barrel ofMonkeys (the non-profit children's theatre group I work with) throughout the Summer. I'd like to invite you to come see it!

We teach writing workshops in the Chicago Public school system and then perform choice stories written by these students for their schools and the public! The show is hilarious and appropriate for all ages and changes each week, so if you've seen it before, it will be an entirely different show.

The show is called That's Weird, Grandma!
Performed Monday nights at 8 PM - and runs about an hour.
It's at the Neo-Futurist Theater at Foster and Ashland Ave in Chicago.
Tickets are $10.
