Thinking of Moving to LA?

Dawn Gray, at Gray Talent, wrote this great email with thoughts on moving to LA, which is a hot topic right now given it's Pilot Season. A must-read!

---------- Forwarded message ---------

Hello All,

This email, for a lot of you, will not be relevant.  However, a lot of our actors have asked us recently is moving to LA is right for them.  Dawn recently put together a list of questions to ask yourself before even thinking about going to LA.

“Should I Stay or Should I Go?”

With pilot season underway, many actors are pondering a trip or permanent move to LA.  Asking some key questions – and answering them honestly – will help determine whether or not now is the right time for that move.

  1. Are you doing well in Chicago now?  Your success rate here can be an indicator of how your skills will transfer.
  2. Do the Chicago Casting directors call you in regularly?  Do you have any TV show or feature film credits on your resume?  Any credits from the top Chicago theatres or comedy/improv clubs?
  3. How are your on-camera skills?  Are you consistently brought in for directors’ sessions or put on check avail even if you didn’t end up booking a project.  We will be happy to provide our opinion and advice.  Do you have a body of on-camera work?  Do you have a demo reel up on Actors Access?
  4. Do you have enough experience under your belt to consistently excel in auditions?  Even if you’re always incredibly prepared, are you giving great auditions?  Los Angeles is far less forgiving of bad auditions than the casting directors here.
  5. Do you look young?  Are you in great shape?  I know it may not seem fair, but beyond talent, LA is also very interested in young talent, good looks and fit bodies.  Be honest with yourself about all of these physical attributes
  6. Are you a marketable character type?  You don’t need to be young, fit and good looking if you fill a specific type.  This is a business about stereotyping, so are you physically like any actors you see on TV or in films?  If possible, pick two or three and become familiar with their career trajectory and how they got their big break.
  7. Can you keep yourself busy and focused when not auditioning?  Will you take classes?  Do selective showcases?  Perform at local comedy clubs?  You need to stay active and “be out there” while building your reputation so that you are not sitting in LA waiting for the next audition.
  8.  Do you currently create your own content?  The easiest way to get discovered is by creating your own work that goes viral.  Look at how Donald Glover and Ellie Kemper got their start (YouTube and Funny Or Die videos).  The more versatile you are, the more chances you will have to be seen. Casting Directors and Manager are always looking for talent who also create their own content.
  9. Do you have a resume or characteristic that will distinguish you from the crowd.  LA casting directors get thousands of submissions per role.  Is there a reason they will want to see you above the others if they are seeing a small number of people?

Moving to LA is a huge step to consider, but the most important question of all to ask is: “Why am I doing this?”  Are you doing it because you are passionate about the art?  Would LA be the best environment to express yourself?  Has your career stalled in Chicago?  Is your life missing something and you believe being a successful actor in LA will make you happy?  Answering all of these questions will help ensure you are taking the LA step at the right time, if ever.
